Here are two samples of the original music: These Are The Street Angels Full Moon (excerpt) Identity Matrix (2003) Questions of who we really are - physically, emotionally and spiritually have long fascinated me. In "Identity Matrix," for digitally processed double bass and soundscape, I explore in poetry and music these questions with one eye toward theoretical physics and the other toward eastern religious philosophy. The double bass is the protagonist who moves through this sound world in various states of indeterminacy, organic chaos and clarity. I recorded the work in my home studio in a musique concrete style - each sound file, musical motive or environmental sound was individually recorded into Pro Tools. Thus the sounds, i.e. bells, birds, voice, percussion are unique to this work and reflect a physical sound source that I then processed to achieve the desired effect. The world premiere performance of "Identity Matrix" was at the Schindler House in Los Angeles as part of a program of "Bass and Electronics," Tom Peters, double bass. Below is an mp3 excerpt. Identity Matrix (2003) (excerpt) Canto de Luz - Song of Light, A Concerto for Electric Violin and Orchestra (2002) This unique electric violin concerto was commissioned by the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra. It was premiered in March of 2003 by the orchestra, under the direction of Catherine Orr, with the composer, Mary Lou Newmark, as soloist. Sold out performances and rave reviews were the result in Montpelier, Vermont. The following are samples of each of the three movements. Canto I Canto II Canto III A Walk Through the Valley - September 11, 2001 (2001) In the wake of the September 11th tragedy, my heart went out to all those who were suffering, grieving their lost loved ones. Truly we all grieved, not just for those most directly affected, but for our country, our lost innocence and sense of security. As an artist, my response was to express my emotions in the form of music and to share it with you. This composition for solo acoustic violin was broadcast over the radio and the internet. "While I usually write my music for electric violin, this piece is written for the acoustic violin. I wanted this composition to be independent of electronics, as if I were standing at the site, alone with just the violin and my grief." New York Times, October 29, 2001.
